The Village of Garden City
"A Planned Community"
In 1869 multimillionaire, Alexander Turney Stewart purchased over 7,000 acres of the Hempstead Plains of Long Island. During that year Garden City was planned with Mineola to the North and Hempstead to the South and a railroad through the center of it.
Within 7 years Garden City was a reality, a planned community, one of the first of its kind in America. Thousands of trees were planted to line the wide streets and avenues.
Very few people came to live in Garden City. This was partly due to houses not being
available for sale, they were only rented from the Stewart Estate. Over the years, Garden City developed its business, recreational and social areas, that is, the Garden City Hotel, the Garden City Golf Course and schools. The Estate system was abolished and land and houses became available for sale. In 1907 Garden City became a suburb in Nassau County and by 1919, the "planned village" of A.T.Stewart was now the Incorporated Village of Garden City. Throughout the years, Garden City has preserved its quaint town character with meticulous landscaping and beautification of its public areas. It's an ideal place to work and live. We are very proud of our community and hope you will allow us to show you around.
